Botany as a subject has been introduced to equip students with knowledge and skills pertaining to all areas of plant science including evolution, physiology, anatomy, developmental biology, genetics etc. A student after graduating with botany as one of the subjects can have career opportunities in horticulture, agriculture, forestry, pomology, environmental biology etc. The major course outcomes are:
v To help students develop a conceptual framework of the diverse life forms and enable them to distinguish between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
v To impart basic knowledge about the general characteristics, life cycle, structure and classification of Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms.
v To introduce the students to basic ecological concepts like trophic structure, productivity, nutrient cycling, energy flow and endemism.
v To provide an understanding of plant taxonomy, anatomy, morphology and embryology.
v To impart awareness about plant water relations and transport mechanism in addition to basic physiological processes viz. photosynthesis and respiration.
v To provide knowledge about the concepts of plant breeding and genetics, biotechnology, economic botany, plant pathology and horticulture.
